The No Wahala Chronicles: Uncovering My Nigerian Roots

Moving to Nigeria after spending the majority of my life in America has been nothing short of eye-opening. It feels like stepping into a story I had only heard through family tales and Sunday afternoon gist, but this time, I’m living it. As a Nigerian American returning home, the pull to explore my roots became more than curiosity; it became a crucial part of my identity. Now, five years into this journey, I’m ready to share the highs, lows, and little surprises that come with finding home again.

Answering the Call

Growing up in America, a rich mix of cultures surrounded me, yet Nigeria always felt like the missing puzzle piece. From family stories to the aroma of jollof rice and okra soup filling the house, there was always a part of me that longed to know more. That longing only grew stronger with time, until I knew I had to make the move. It wasn’t just about visiting anymore; it was about living here, breathing it in, and claiming it as mine.

First Taste: Lagos

Nothing could have prepared me for Lagos. The energy is overwhelming and intoxicating all at once: danfos weaving through traffic, hawkers balancing entire shops on their heads, owambe music spilling out of every street corner. It's messy, noisy, colorful—and alive!

This isn't just a short holiday visit. It's a permanent move - atleast for now ya'll.

Suddenly, I've been thrown into the deep end, learning how to navigate everything from house hunting to workplace politics. Lagos has made it clear: survival here isn’t optional, and adaptation comes fast.

No Wahala (Well, Sometimes)

Here’s the truth—life in Nigeria is not without its wahala.

This is just the beginning of my No Wahala Chronicles. My journey is a mix of culture shocks, lessons learned, and a growing sense of belonging. For anyone considering a return, know this: it won’t always be easy, but it will always be worth it. I think....

My first real wahala? Apartment hunting.
